By Samuka V. KonnehSome youths of Nimba County under the banner of “Concerned Youth of Ganta for Reconstruction and Development” on last Friday slaughtered two cows as sacrifice for the county and the country at large. During the sacrifice ceremony, many young Nimbanians expressed happiness on the event and called on God to bless and protect their county and people.
Speaking to this paper shortly after the event, the chairman of the organization, Mr. Mohammed L. Kamara, said the sacrifice was a conglomerate effort by youths of the county resident both home and in the Diaspora. He disclosed that the entire program budgeted and expended a little above 3,500 US Dollars. “First we are here to celebrate the 163rd independence anniversary of Liberia and secondly to sacrifice for peace in country and Nimba as a particular case,” said chairman Kamara.
When asked what the youth of Ganta hope to gain from the sacrifice in a particular case, the youth chairman said: “We pray to the Almighty Allah to inspire reason that will work in the heart of those that have been seen as obstacles to this land return agenda to join the winning wagon. The whole land issue resolution is a give and take,” he said.
The organization used the occasion to call on President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf to fast track the recommendations contained in the Land Committee report so that the whole land issue can be amicably resolved. Reacting to critics that such a call should have been made in the Mosque while the president was in attendance, the youth chairman noted that the Mosque program was organized by the National Muslim Council of Liberia. He said there was no way for the youth to make this presentation. He however commended the president for her confessed position that the recommendation as contained in the report of the land committee will be implemented to the fullest.
Mr. Kamara noted that the youths of Ganta and Nimba have confidence in the credibility of the president and in no way have doubt about her commitment. She is a woman of substance, he concluded. While his trust in the president is glaring, the youth leader also maintained and reminded his audience on the last incident in Lofa County. He said though that problem was reported to have started on Korpo’s death, it also had land factors in Lawalazoo and other areas. “The issue of land cannot be taken lightly, Once this issue has not been resolved substantially, I believe it will have national security implications for which we all are not even prepared,” he maintained.
The cows were slaughtered, butchered and distributed in pieces to people far and near. Many people speaking to us after the ceremony expressed happiness and prayed that God accepts the sacrifice, answers their prayers for the county and country and bless the hands of those who contributed so handsomely to the procurement of the cows for the attainment of peace and stability.
