The Press Union of Liberia said it has received news of the passage of the Freedom of Information Act in the House of Representatives with excitement and relief.PUL President Peter Quaqua says the Union is humbled by the overwhelming vote taken on Thursday by the Representatives to enact a law that will enhance greater openness and awareness in Liberia.
While congratulating the House and the Liberian people for this achievement, the Union says the passage of the bill on the eve of Independence Day, July 26, symbolizes the true independence and freedom of the Liberian Nation state.
In a release issued yesterday, PUL said the Freedom of Information Act was submitted to the legislature over two years ago in April 2008 and must now get a concurrence vote in the Senate.
According to the release, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is said to be waiting to affix her signature as soon as the instrument reaches her desk, according to Information Ministry authorities.
